A portrait of the artist by New York photographer Xanthe Elbrick, Basic Black is a ‘portrait of the artist as a young man,’ and a tribute to Jan’s days working as a gallerist in New York City, ‘learning the ropes’ of the art market prior to launching his own career.
Meant as a bit of an ironic statement in the ascendant days of ‘neo-conservative’ populist politicians during the 2015-2020 period, this portrait has turned into a fitting tribute to the first phase of Jan’s work and his conservative roots.
