WELCOME

With undergraduate and graduate degrees from Harvard in the US and Oxford in the UK, and regarded as one of the most interesting, entertaining, exciting, engaging new voices in contemporary art, American Neo-Pop artist Jan Larsen’s multi-media work reflects on the signs of our times, reflecting on popular culture and commenting on our contemporary  place in history.

“Each successive moment of history is indeed the most interesting and exciting time to be alive.  From our Western perspective, witnessing the leading lights of the Renaissance in Italy, the ensuing Enlightenment flashing its brilliance across Europe, the prescience of poets like Wordsworth, Whitman, and countless artists of talent since, noting the observations of historian Alexis de Tocqueville and chroniclers of all persuasions throughout our histories, applying post-modern reasoning and prescience from philosophy and fine art from the likes of Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol, we can indeed reasonably conclude that it just gets better and better, more- and more-interesting, and ever-more-intricate, and challenging at that, as we go.”

Born into a conservative American family in the American Midwest during 1967’s ‘Summer of Love,’ Larsen blends conservatism and liberality in his practice, beginning his schooling as part of a cultural-integration program at a predominantly African-American school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He then proceeded through the American public school system to earn his undergraduate degree from Harvard, and a Master’s degree from Oxford University in England.

In 1997, Jan moved to New York City to complete what he calls “an in-depth enquiry into the character, history, and living, breathing, Beuys-style experiential-sculpture nature of the professional practice of fine art.”

Founding and building four brick-and-mortar galleries under his name in downtown New York City, the historic heart of American contemporary art, representing scores of artists, producing hundreds of exhibitions, and loaning works in partnership with the US State Department as part of its Art In Embassies programme, Jan built JLA into a global fine art practice.

Along the way, he educated himself in art history and learned the hands-on tools of the fine art trade, while refining and selecting his own sculptural approach.

Jan’s work speaks to his American experience, responds to world events, and reflects on the quality of our shared contemporary experience, world-wide.

In 2019, ready to share his work with collectors in Asia, Jan began setting up his new home-base and production studios in Singapore, and is delighted to be joined by his collectors, fellow artists, and for-profit, charitable, and governmental institutional production partners in the US, Europe, Africa, and Asia, having contributed about SGD 50,000 to Singapore Institutions of Public Character to date.

Welcome, to Jan Larsen Art.
